Historical Use for Herbs

The following is general information for historical uses of herb plants, botanicals, fruits and other natural whole ingredients.

Albizia Julibrissin (Albizia Julibrissin) is a time-honored Traditional Chinese Medicinal herb (TCM) beneficial for bad temper, irritability, insomnia, poor memory and pent-up emotions*.  

Astragalus Root (Astragalus membranaceus) enhances the body's defense responses, as well raising antioxidant activity for a boost in overall health.     

Blue Violet Leaf (Viola odorata) is used to moderate anger, comfort and strengthen the heart*.    

Catnip Herb (Nepeta cataria) has been used as a mild tranquilizer and sedative. It is traditionally and most commonly used to treat anxiety, insomnia and nervousness. Its effectiveness is enhanced when combined with valerian and passion flower*.  

Chamomile Flower (Matricaria chamomilla) is a safe, time-honoured sedative herb commonly used for insomnia and restlessness, especially when irritability is also a factor*.     

Chinese Senega Root (Polygala, Yuan Zhi) is a Traditional Chinese Medicinal herb (TCM) to support the 'shen' or spirit*.  

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) in studies has shown that it may lower LDL cholesterol, may have a regulatory effect on blood sugar, may have the ability to stop medication-resistant yeast infections, has an anti-clotting effect on the blood, may provide relief in arthritis pain, is a natural food preservative and is a great source of manganese, iron and calcium*.     

Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia) is an immune-modulating herb that helps trigger the activation of numerous immune cells*.  

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) (fruit) Elder berry contains the flavonoid glycosides, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, and rutin, and anthocyan glycosides chrysanthemin, sambucin, and sambucyanin. It can help in the treatment of cold and flu symptoms including aches and pains, coughing, nasal congestion, mucous discharge and fever; immune system stimulant.*. Eleuthero Root (Eleutherococcus senticosus) has been shown to help reduce the effects of stress on the body and support energy production and endurance, blood sugar and mental acuity. It also provides immune support which may decrease the severity, duration and frequency of infections*.  

Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis Canadensis) The active constituents found in Goldenseal root are known to support wide ranging immune support and powerful antimicrobial activity*.     

Honeysuckle Flower (Lonicera sempervirens) is used traditionally to calm anger and for eliminating heat and accumulated toxins from the body*.  

Lavender Flower (Lavandula angustifolia) is well known for soothing and relaxing, calming and regenerating and aiding in stress relief*.     

Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnate) is a he sedative and anti-anxiety herb, popularly used for treating nervousness and insomnia*. 

Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus soyauxi) has a calming and stabilizing effect on the mind, body, and emotions*. 

Squawvine (Mitchella repens) supports strengthening the uterus and helping relieve congestion of the uterus and ovaries. It is also a nerve sedative to sooth, calm and ease nervous exhaustion and irritability*.  

Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant that naturally grows in damp areas throughout the Americas, Europe and northern Asia. During the maturing process the roots of the Valerian plant produce two substances known as isovaleric and valerenic acid. These acidic volatile oil compounds are thought to be the significant active ingredients which are responsible for Valerian root's ability to relax the central nervous system, muscles and induce a peaceful night's sleep.

Double blind studies have shown that Valerian root can decrease the amount of time it takes for people with mild insomnia to fall asleep. Herbalist believe that fresh Valerian root extracts have a sedative affect in the central nervous system which creates the safe tranquilizing feeling of peace and calmness while reducing tension headaches and muscular pain.

It is also widely used as a sedative herb that assists in the relief of insomnia, stress, anxiety and stress related hypertension*.  

Yarrow Flower (Achillea millefolium) is a natural decongestant and expectorant having astringent action that is useful in treating nasal congestion due to cold. It is also used for the treatment of fever*.
